It Can’t Happen Here is based on the semi-satirical novel by Sinclair Lewis (1935) and the play by Lewis and John C. Moffitt (1936). This piece, written as Germany’s power was rising in the early 1930’s, imagines similar circumstances as a liberal rebellion struggles against a newly elected totalitarian government in the United States. This play was performed simultaneously across America in 1936 as part of the Federal Theatre Project.
