About the Show
The Laramie Project is a play by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theatre Project in response to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man, in Laramie, Wyoming. Kaufman and the other company members visited Laramie on six occasions and interviewed residents, members of the police force, Matthew’s friends, and others, attempting to understand what happened and why.
In a series of poignant reflections taken from these interviews, the residents of Laramie react to the hate crime and surrounding media storm with anger, bewilderment and sorrow. The play portrays the seismic and deeply personal impact Matthew’s death had on this small town while also demonstrating the power of the human spirit to triumph over bigotry and violence.
The Laramie Project will be rated PG-13.
Roles
The Laramie Project is an ensemble play; many actors will play multiple roles. While some roles are larger than others, every actor in the play has an important part in the telling of the story. This is truly an ensemble show.
You should read at least part of the play prior to auditions. Although the audition monologues can be understood on their own, the more you know of the play and the characters, the better prepared you will be for your monologue.
The Laramie Project deals with very serious subject matter in an honest and forthright manner. It contains descriptions of violence, discussion of homosexuality and some adult language. If you are unsure about whether you/your family is comfortable with all of the content in the show, it is important that you read the script and discuss whether or not it is right for you before auditions. Parents/guardians will need to complete the permission form allowing you to audition.
